A new, deadlier strain of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has emerged in DR Congo and neighboring countries. The Clade Ib strain has resulted in 14,479 cases and 455 deaths in DRC, with fears of further spread due to high population density and regional conflicts. The World Health Organization is considering declaring an international emergency.
Cases have also been reported in Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Kenya. The outbreak remains a significant health threat.
